Those Early Times With Pam and I

Thought I’d pop a quick video I did some time ago of Pam and my first meeting. First time in Bali and then I popped over to her in Cape Town, South Africa.   I’m actually putting together a longer post over on the GeekandJock site as a celebration (as well as the challenges) that we had when we first met. That post is coming out in a few days to co-incide with the very first time we met on Facebook on February 12th, 2009. There’s some great insights for those looking to get into or are already in a long distance relationship. Those Early Times With Pam and I

The Big Miracle Wrinkle Cream Rip-off

If it sounds too good to be true, it more than likely is Never a truer word has been spoken when it comes to health care. I don’t know about you but I’ve seen these anti-wrinkle advertisements popping up everywhere, over the last couple of months. Pam drew my attention and suggested the cream ‘looked’ interesting since it was advertised and promoted in a local U.K newspaper. Congratulations to Queensland Rail

When people think of a large State wide company like Queensland Rail, they conjure up images of people working in a quasi-Govenment mentality. You know the stereotypical type of worker who’s there to fill in the day and not give a stuff about much at all. Not As You’d Think They Are Well, the Queensland Rail people I’ve dealt with on 4 occasions have been an absolute pleasure. Currently with work, I’m traveling into the Brisbane CBD quite often during the week. I’m still getting used to train travel so I often am just a little confused on what I’m doing and where I’m suppose to be doing it. Necessitating tapping the nearest QR guy or gal on the shoulder and seeking help. Well, when it comes to customer service, no matter whether in the ticket office or walking the platform, there’s simply nothing too trivial for them to help with and be overjoyed in making sure you have everything you need to ensure your (my) journey is a total success. Helping You Remove the Dreaded Google Penalty Slap

Image
Helping You Remove the Dreaded Google Penalty Slap Follow these guidelines to get the Google Penalty removed faster. Way back in February 2012, my GeekandJock Relationship Blog site was nailed by Google’s Quality Guidelines team as having ‘inorganic’ back-links. Like many Webmasters at the time, I wanted the quality content and relationship and dating help that I was producing to get into the hands of as many people as I could. The site wasn’t, at the time, geared to produce an income , though that was obviously the aim in the long term. I was engaged in common practise of peppering other websites with back-links that, in hindsight, wasn’t natural and the site paid the price. Real bad. Google Isn’t Forthcoming in Back-link Removal Assistance The site, like many of yours, is a labour of love and a part-time activity. Getting the dreaded short notice, instantly had me shaking at the knees. What do I do next? In short, here’s what you need to do: Check into Webmaster Tools Click your sit

WP Social SEO Booster IS My New Best Friend - I See Stars!

Image
Confession: I’ve fallen out of love! You know yourself, seeing Star Ratings in the Google SERPs catches your own eye. And so it goes for everyone else, using Google. Star Ratings are the new best friend for anyone with a website and wanting more traffic and potential customers. And Star Rating add credibility which is an influencing factor in Sales. I fell out of love with Author hReview and found a new love to replace her – and she’s even better so read on. Why Author hReview Is Rubbish? Ongoing (and high priced) 6 monthly renewal subscription. In comparison to my new love, I personally think Author hReview worked poorly The support was quite sporadic and almost a pick and choose to who got answered by the author, Hesham Zebida. Updates are few and far between While I found Author hReview a shiny object to start, the polish waned. Enter the SEO Booster Review What I fell in love with first was the value for money, given SEO Booster was only $24.00 which is more than half the price

Free Music and Old Content Equals New Content and Audience

Image
Did you know you can use some old blog content, add some free music and produce new content, a new audience as well as more backlinks to your site? Well, I was reading on the train a few days ago about stealing content. Yeah, stealing is a bad thing and Google might punish you for plagarism but there’s a real sneaky trick to get around all this …. and here’s the secret sauce. Bingo, Bango, Boo … Hey Presto It’s your own content you’re thieving so cool for cats. The reasoning is to look at all those old pieces of content that get little click thru and interest and re-purpose the content into videos. Well, being a boring train ride, I deftly sent a number of articles off to ReadItLater for safe keeping. And I remembered the wonders of a video distribution network called TubeMogul – one upload that’s pushed out to multiple destination video aggregates like YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion etc etc. I used this service a number of years ago and the cool thing was being able to write the same des

Advertising On Your Website - Easy and Automated

Once you’ve got some PageRank and traffic coming to your site, you need to think about advertising revenue. That big question of “How can I leverage all my hard work and make some money”. Keep reading because there’s a very special offer I’ve arranged for anyone wanting it. Advertising The Easy Way I’m in the same situation as you are. I run a number of websites and this one is just my ‘play thing’ and where I simply blog my random thoughts. The thing is, over at GeekandJock, we were now at a stage to start wanting to monetize on our popularity and traffic. Advertising ‘the easy way’ was high on our agenda. When I say easy, I mean easy. Life is far too busy as it is to have to be concerned with managing approvals of incoming advertising, whether they be banner ads or text links. For that matter, the growing volume of guest posts , on GeekandJock, is now time consuming. Advertising Platform Investigations Here’s where I give you the low-down on what I did and the ultimate advertising s

Is VirUrl Just a Haven For Click Fraud and Bots?

Image
Is VirUrl Worth Any Investment At All? In the never-ending pursuit of marketing and advertising efficiencies, my research pointed to 2 emerging advertising networks that are supposedly designed for spreading the news about small business blogs and the content. These are OutBrain and Virurl . I wanted to test them out and kick the tyres – so you don’t have too. I submitted some GeekandJock content to OutBrain and, for reasons that defy me, they knocked my content as being unsuitable and low quality for their network as well as having Opt-Ins. Well, just a little bit of digging revealed other sites are using the same (if not worse) layouts and methods to promote interaction and broadening their subscriber base. I can only surmise that maybe a few articles relating to ‘s e x’ might have turned them away. Let’s Test Out VirUrl While OutBrain lists some heavy-hitting websites that display their advertising and promoted web content, I was slightly anxious VirUrl doesn’t. In fact, the first t

30% More Traffic In 12 Hours and Creating Strong Social Signals Too!

It’s All In The Engagement and Communities We’re always looking at increasing client traffic, creating strong Social Signals for engagement and SEO as well as maintaining a very low resource footprint because we (well me in particular) like to minimise repetitive and boring tasks. Those 3 areas are what every website owner lusts after. Am I right? And I’m guessing you’re probably just like us. So do you want some secret sauce that we’re testing at the moment? Social Is The New Traffic Source, No Question! I hope you have been keeping a little abreast of SEO trends and what Google has been doing for the last 12 to 18 months because it has to do with engagement and Social Signals. I remember predicting this trend with my last Marketing employer 24 months ago and stressing the need to combine their SEO and Social team resources. Pity they didn’t move on my recommendation back then as they would have been ahead of the game, though I understand they’ve now done it :) So Social and Traffic,

McDonalds Menu PhD

Image
Pam and Nic have the greatest laughs, at my expense – when it comes to McDonalds. McDonalds Leads Me To Insanity Is it just me or does McDonalds have one of the most confusing menus known to man? Let me tell you how I see it so you can better understand then. They’ve got Supersize, Upsize, Meal-Deals and whatever else. In my mind, the guys and gals behind the counter seem to give me the impression that each and every customer knows their products and individual menu items, intimately.   I just want an Angus burger with some fries, OK? “Did you want a meal deal?”. “What?”, I say. This some how involves a drink and I’m led to believe that there’s different size meal deals so the drink size and the fries size are locked in so I cant simply deduct one price of a small fries and have a large drink. Now They Confuse With The Favourite Angus Burger, Damn Them “Did you want to Grand Angus or the Special Angus?”. So I need to slide across and see that one has bacon now. Christ, why can’t I just

Webinar Express - Goodbye to GoToWebinar Forever!

Image
Webinar Express – Goodbye to GoToWebinar Forever! Every once in a while, a product comes along that literally changes the course of an entire marketplace. Google did it with Online Advertising Apple did it with the iPhone Well, for far too long, Online Webinars have been expensive and very clunky to use. I tried working with GoToWebinar 12 months ago and it was a nightmare to use and equally so to record and store for later use. I gave up in utter frustration. GoToWebinar and their fellow online webinar businesses are about to go out of business, seriously. Webinar Express is a WordPress plugin that has only just entered the market and it is mindblowing. Let me repeat that, Webinar Express is mindblowing! How, I hear you ask? Simplicity Like Nothing Before It You know me and I love things easy, quick and comphrensive and feature rich. It takes a bit to make me say WOW but I did when it took me no more than 5 minutes to setup a complete Webinar that incorporates Social Marketing as wel

Choose Wordpress If You’re In Business Or You’re a Dummy

WordPress is Better .. Nuff Said! It was interesting to see comments on Facebook about several new CRM/CMS systems that supposedly are more ‘beautiful’ than WordPress. What was interesting to note was, these people were going to launch into a relatively new CMS systems for mission critical business related websites. Now, I’m all for change to a better widget BUT a complete business running on something untested is just asking for trouble, if you ask me. Why Stick With WordPress? Listen, I started website life with handcrafted bland and boring HTML. I moved to GUI HTML editors then through Joomla, Drupal and settled on WordPress. The latter in my opinion is best of breed, mature and simply made for businesses wanting to get (and stay) connected online. Joomla – Short and Sweet Joomla was and still is very crude when it comes to support as well as robust plugins that extend the feature set. Flame on if you still use Joomla. Drupal – Nice But Ahem … Drupal ran all my websites for a few ye

Be A Brain And Travel By Train

Funny how often we rely on traveling around by car, isn’t it? Pam’s permanent Australian visa currently hinges on Nic getting his temporary one. That relies on simply getting his medicals over, done with and approved by the Immigration Dept so today was the day to get into the Briabane CBD and nail that. And what better way to traverse the journey than by train. Since I’ve recently been using the train to travel from Buderim to Brisbane, I was aware of the ease of use, not having the hassle of City parking and expense and it’s also quite relaxing. And neither Pam or Nic have done the trip. So time to saddle up. It’s just as fast as car. Pleasant scenery. Air Conditioned travel. I like it because I don’t have to do the driving. All medicals done in an hour or so. Immigration people were all good, helpful and pleasant too which takes stress away from dealing with Government Departments. Now once the medicals are formally approved, Nic gets the temporary which paves the way for both of th

Employers Shoot Themselves In The Foot By Recruiters

Employers Shoot Themselves In The Foot By Recruiters If there’s any knowledge in this world that’s worth knowing, it usually comes from experience. Real experience is borne from maturity. Real experience is a culmination of seeing interconnecting threads of disparate information that make up a solution. This powerful skill isn’t available from graduates. Unfortunately, they simply are ‘qualified’ from a tertiary institution that’s typically many years behind the times, and especially so when it comes to the digital age. Employers Doing the Sidestep Shuffle The bottom line is both the employer and the recruitment firm are both trying desperately to gain an edge for a better bottom line. The employer engages the recruiter with a set of hastily written employment criteria to fill an organisational gap. They do this to sidestep the bottom line impact of dedicated HR personnel to do the real hiring process. As it turns out, this very process also sidesteps responsibility in hiring the wrong

The World of SEO Continues to Change

Google Really Might Be Evil … People Can Invent Worse This might not be of much interest to many of the readers to this site but I thought I’d pen something that’s dear to my heart – if you don’t know what SEO is, move along … move along. A few days ago, Google rolled out another of it’s world impacting algorithms. They’ve been steadily fine tuning their search and ranking code in an endevour to what they say makes for a fairer playing field for the production of high quality content as opposed to scoring backlinks from other sites. These backlinks have always been reputed to be of equal importance and I dare say, Google promoted this fact until recently. In the past, this has meant people also invented ways to scam the Google system by paying for high quality backlinks or devising other methods to obtain them … read ‘Link Farms’ and ‘Link Directories’. Google has now changed that. Their algorithm now determines whether you have inorganic or webspam backlinks, pointing to your site.

What"s the Australian Government Doing About Kony 2012?

Image
So what’s been the Australian Governments response to the sudden rise and groundswell in the Kony 2012 movement? After watching the Kony video for the first time last night, I was stuck with the notion that our governments are an extension of ourselves I.e. selfish, self serving and narrow minded. If there’s a worthy cause in another part of the world which has absolutely no benefit to the country, they’re not interested. Sure, that actually aligns with the majority of the human race on this fragile planet, isn’t it? Rather stupidly, I was under the maligned impression that governments were interested in the well being of the globe. It wasn’t until watching the YouTube video that that realization was smashed to pieces. What a freaking sad bunch we all are. Question all you like about the ethics of the organization that is spearheading the movement. Who really gives a crap about penny pinching or the organizational skills or fragmented worthy causes? The real aha moment is they’ve got
