Tidy Up and Rid All Those Useless Facebook Friends
Piss Off Useless Facebook Friends
I joined Facebook way way back in June of 2007.
Call me an early adopter and a techo geek but, back then, I saw Facebook as a powerful medium, especially for Marketers.
Well, I was wrong, 6 years later.
Facebook Really Is For Personal Stuff
When I first joined the Social Network 6 years ago, my impression was a haven for spreading the word on any product – it simply appeared to be a playground for hungry consumers.
Over those years, I’ve accepted any interesting sounding person and done it at face value – you never know who might add value to your life or business.
6 months ago, the number swelled to just under 5,000 – as it turns out, I lost interest in Facebook a few years ago, mainly due to it being unmanageable and adding no value. That’s not what a Social Network is for – it’s suppose to be Social, a connection to social life and activities of those who have touched your life in some way.
Time To Cull The Chaff
I knew this was going to a real pain in the ass. Unfriending requires 5 mouse clicks per person and I had an inkling I was embarking on a journey of deleting 3,000 or more Facebook Friends – turns out the number was closer to 4,600 :)
Thankfully, I’m an automation freak and knew I wouldn’t be the only one who had needed to do this.
With the help of a Chrome browser plugin called Tampermonkey and a userscript, it turned out to be a matter of ticking a checkbox for each friend I wanted to cull and press the Mass-Unfriend button.
Easy mass facebook unfriending
I did find that doing this process in batches of around 20 or 30 made it a little faster and easier to handle – there’s probably some browser issue when it needs to process more than what I recommend.
Facebook Finally At Peace
I’ve no idea how long it would have taken doing each one at a time and using 5 clicks but the semi-automated method still took me 3 or 4 days and the end result has left me with a great Facebook experience.
I only have people that I know – friends and family. The very thing Facebook was intended for.
I can browse and keep up with news and events that are happening in real people’s lives. Not faceless marketers who I gain no value from – in hindsight, what a total waste of time to me and them.
